Happy New Year - Annual BCV Update

Published 12/31/2024

Happy holidays, and happy new year!

Now that we provide binary snapshots on the BCV repo, I no longer have to manually open my IDE, build a binary, and upload that file to GitHub as a release - every time BCV has a new feature. Instead, users can experience these updates the minute the source code hits the repo. (GitHub actions automatically compiles the repository) - The downfall to this, is I have been quite lazy, in regard to pushing regular updates.

Every single commit to the repo builds a snapshot binary, that is hosted for 3 months on GitHub. This has worked great, as we normally have an update come in at least once a month. However, around this time of the year - I always have that gut feeling that I’ve forgotten to do regular updates. So for two years now, I’ve pushed the december update. This has essentially moved our update schedule to be annual updates.

I think this is wonderful, and works out great - as the majority of the BCV users have their own preference for the version they use. Some come pre-installed with their distro, and others are using kits that have older versions bundled with them. And those that need regular updates, either pull from the git directly, and compile it - or they use the snapshots provided by GitHub (Courtesy of ThexXTURBOXx).

One idea I had, was changing the versioning to include the release year. So we could be BCV-24.0 - for this years release.

Maybe next year, for 2025, we could look at doing that.

Until then, you can obtain your copy of the 2024 BCV binary over at the BCV GitHub.
